In 2018 we did a survey of the site and recorded 68 mature fruit trees which, either because of age or variety, we believe are worth preserving. These trees, mainly apples, are now protected and cannot be removed without permission from the Directors. We encourage appropriate and timely pruning to look after the trees.
Many of the trees are well over one hundred years old and are varieties which have maybe fallen out of fashion but produce wonderful apples, such as Lane’s Prince Albert and Newton Wonder.
There are several websites, for example www.fruitid.com, which can help identify the variety. They have a database of over 400 types of apple. There are also specialist growers who offer an identification service such as R. V. Roger in Pickering.
